Adolescents

For young people, The Village offers counselling for the physical, psychological, social, identity and relationship changes encountered in the journey to adulthood.

Adolescence is a powerful, vulnerable, transformative stage of life. Young people are navigating identity, emotions, school pressures, friendships, family dynamics, and a world that feels louder than ever. At The Village Health, we offer specialised adolescent counselling that helps teens feel grounded, understood, and empowered to take ownership of their wellbeing.

We create a space where young people can speak honestly, explore safely, and develop the emotional tools they need to thrive.

We support adolescents who are experiencing:

  • Anxiety, panic, or chronic stress

  • Low mood, withdrawal, or depression

  • School avoidance, overwhelm, or academic pressure

  • Friendship issues, conflict, or loneliness

  • Identity development, self-worth, and belonging challenges

  • Trauma, family conflict, separation, or major transitions

  • Behaviour changes, impulsivity, or emotional reactivity

  • OCD, ADHD, ASD and neurodivergent support needs

  • Grief, loss, or change

  • Coping difficulties after bullying or online/social pressure

Whether a teen is struggling quietly or their world feels completely chaotic, we meet them with steady, evidence-based support.

Our Therapeutic Approach

We blend the best of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), trauma-informed counselling, somatic regulation strategies, motivational and strengths-based approaches, relational, connection-led practice and educational therapy principles when learning challenges are present. We work closely with schools, GPs, paediatricians, and youth services to create a cohesive, steady network of care.

We don’t push teens; we walk beside them.

Parent Involvement

Parents are a vital part of the process, not in the room every time, but in the Village surrounding the young person. This wrap-around approach ensures that teens get consistent support in every environment that matters.

We include parents through:

  • Intake sessions

  • Regular check-ins

  • Updates where appropriate

  • Clear communication

  • Guidance on how to support your teen at home

Children’s Mental Health

Children feel deeply, even when they don’t yet have the words to explain what’s happening inside. Big emotions, worries, and overwhelm can be confusing and frightening for young minds and without the right tools, even the calmest of kids can quickly become dysregulated.

At The Village Health, we offer specialised children’s counselling that helps little people understand their emotions, build confidence, and develop the psychological resources they need to navigate life’s challenges.

We create a safe, playful, nurturing space where children feel supported, soothed, and never alone with their feelings.

How Emotional Distress Shows Up in Children

Children often express distress through behaviour rather than language.
This can look like:

  • Excessive worry or anxiety

  • Crying, meltdowns, or withdrawal

  • Anger, aggression, or lashing out

  • Nausea, tummy aches, or physical complaints

  • Running away or hiding

  • Shutting down or freezing

  • Clinginess or separation anxiety

  • Difficulty sleeping, focusing, or settling

These are signs of overwhelm, not signs of bad behaviour. Their brains simply need help developing the skills to cope.

How Counselling Helps

Children’s counselling supports kids to:

  • Understand their emotions and why their body reacts the way it does

  • Build emotional regulation skills

  • Strengthen self-esteem and confidence

  • Develop healthy coping strategies

  • Improve communication and problem-solving

  • Navigate friendships and social challenges

  • Feel safe expressing their needs

  • Learn to return to their window of tolerance more quickly

Through play, art, storytelling, and gentle therapeutic conversations, children build the skills they need to feel more stable and supported.

Our Approach

We use developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, child-led methods including:

  • Educating children about their growing brains

  • Narrative and expressive therapies

  • Somatic and regulation-based strategies

  • ACT for children

  • Social–emotional skill-building

  • Strengths-based language

  • Mindfullness

  • Attachment and relational safety practices

Every session is crafted to match the child’s age, temperament, and nervous-system capacity.

Parent Involvement

Parents are an essential part of the journey.
We include caregivers through:

  • A comprehensive intake session

  • Parent input and debrief in each session

  • Strategies to use at home

  • Clear, supportive communication

  • Collaboration with teachers or schools (with consent)

Our wrap-around model ensures children experience consistent care everywhere, home, school, and in our clinic.

Who We Support

We work with children navigating:

  • Anxiety and worries

  • Big emotions and emotional dysregulation

  • Behavioural challenges

  • Trauma, separation, or family change

  • Out of home placements and other instabilities

  • Friendship difficulties

  • Sensory sensitivities and neurodivergence

  • Learning differences and school-based stress

  • Grief, loss, or transitions

Whether the challenges are new or long-standing, we meet each child with compassion and an unwavering belief in their capacity to grow.

The Heart of Our Work

We believe every child deserves:

  • A safe place to land

  • Adults who listen without judgment

  • Tools that make emotions feel less scary

  • Connection that strengthens confidence

  • Support that honours their unique personality
